Hundreds of years from now, surviving humans discover how to send consciousness back through time, into people of the 21st century, while attempting to change the path of humanity.

In a post-apocalyptic future, thousands of special operatives are tasked with preventing the collapse of society. These operatives, known as “travelers”, have their consciousness sent back in time and transferred into the body of present-day individuals who would otherwise be moments from death, to minimize unexpected impact on the timeline. The transfer requires the exact location of the target, made possible by twenty-first century smart phones and GPS. Prepared using social media and public records concerning their targets, each traveler must maintain the host’s pre-existing life as cover for the rest of their lives, while carrying out missions in teams of five.

2. It’s About Complex Relationships

Character development is every important to every story.  What is great about this show, you get introduced, learn and love the characters.  They all live complex lives and are forced to adapt to the difficulties of all their relationships.  One has to deal with an abusive boyfriend.  Another must work through an emotional relationship with a boyfriend/social worker.  Another deals with addiction problems and another spousal issues.   They all have to deal with these issues, all the while working on difficult missions to save the world.

3. You Never See The Future

Cast of the SciFi television show Travelers

One thing that spoil time travel shows is the images of a horrible future.  This show keeps this under wraps with several of their protocols.  All travelers are required to behave according to certain protocols to protect the timeline.  As viewers we can imagine how bad the future could be but throughout the course three seasons, we never get to see it.  They know the future is not great but they are not allowed to talk about it.  Their mission is to just work towards fixing the issues that could improve the situation for the better.

4. It’s About Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)

Artificial Intelligence has been tried and done right in shows like “Unknown Persons” and “Battle Star Galactic”.  In this show, the entire grand plan was concocted by a very powerful A.I. that attempts to manipulate events in time to improve the outcome of the future.  The missions are dictated by the Director, an artificial intelligence in the future that monitors the timeline, aimed at saving the world from a series of catastrophic events. One method by which the Director communicates with travelers is via pre-pubescent children used as messengers; unlike adults, any child can safely be taken over for a few minutes and then released from control without risk of killing them.

5. It’s a Netflix Show

Netflix presents Travelers

People always say that Netflix will give anyone a show.  If that is true, viewers should be thankful that this one got greenlit.  Today, Travelers is one of the most thought provocative time travel show in recent memory and it deserve the attention of viewers.  The series is an international co-production between streaming service Netflix and Canadian specialty channel Showcase for its first two seasons, after which Netflix took over as its sole production company and exclusive worldwide distributor.  This gave the show needed exposure.  It is also brought to you by the same team responsible for another time travel show called Continuum.   This show also have some of the same writers, producers and actors from the Continuum series.
