Evidence of election meddling in 2016 was a large part of the Mueller Report, however the Trump Administration continuously denied and confirmed it. As reported by several media outlet, Trump is currently the subject of multiple investigations by both federal and state officials.
There were many calls for him to be impeached by several Democratic officials. Today those calls were turned into action by the House speaker who announced formal impeachment inquiry into the president's action.
The actions of the Trump presidency have revealed the dishonorable fact of the president’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections. Therefore, today, I am announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry.
Pelosi has been reluctant to initiate impeach proceedings after numerous infractions from the president. However her change of heart came after a whistleblower revealed Trump may have pressured a foreign leader to investigate former vice president and potential 2020 campaign rival Joe Biden and his family, in an attempt to meddle in the election process.
Senate Republicans like Mitch McConnell and Senator McCarthy continued to defend the president's actions. Others are claiming that this was an attempt of Democratics to get back at the president for the 2016 election. Another Republican official stated that members of the intelligence community is out to get the president. There are few who were not quick to rush to judgment and stated that they would rather see the evidence.
Most Democrats are wondering how much more discredit should this president bring upon the American government institution before Republicans take action. There are several scandals this president is involved in where other former presidents would have faced political consequences.
What is even hypocritical is the position republicans now have on impeachment. In the past Senator Lindsay Graham argued that, "impeachment is not a legal matter and should be used to maintain checks and balance on the executive branch". However, today in the case of Trump, they changed their position and is calling the Democrat action a witch hunt.
Biden on Tuesday called for Congress to begin impeachment of Trump if the White House continues to stonewall congressional investigations, including questions regarding reports that Trump asked the Ukrainian president to investigate Biden and his son, Hunter.
I can take the political attacks. They’ll come and they’ll go, and in time they’ll soon be forgotten. But if we allow a president to get away with shredding the United States Constitution, that will last forever,” Biden said in brief remarks Tuesday afternoon in Wilmington, Del.
The House plans to vote Wednesday on a resolution disapproving of the Trump administration’s efforts to block the release of the complaint and the need to protect the whistleblower. Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a statement,
This is not a partisan matter, it’s about the integrity of our democracy, respect for the rule of law and defending our Constitution.
Willful knowledge of others bad behavior makes one complicit and responsible for the consequences. In the case of the Trump presidency, Republicans are complicit due to their lack of action, and their defense of the president. It is also a sign that morality has left their party because they allow the president to act with implicit authority even when it has undo consequences.
After Trump won the nomination in 2016, the republican party was split. It is even more apparent today, because one half supports him another don't. Unfortunately, Republican elected officials sees their defense of the president as a sound political move, and they continue to choose party over self and those who elected them and that will be the reason for their imminent failure in the upcoming election.
