How to Make Your Backyard a Personal Oasis

This summer we should all spend as much time outdoors as possible. Here are some ways you can turn your backyard into your own personal oasis.

One of the most common areas for homeowners to renovate is their backyard, and there are plenty of ways you can beautify this part of your home. In addition to creating a more seductive environment, your backyard can be made into an exotic getaway that can help you disconnect from your daily grind. To do this, you only need to decide what type of environment you want to create. From there, you can follow these steps to create a truly immersive experience.

  1. 1 Clear Away the Mess

The very first thing you'll have to do is clear away the brush, debris, and unwanted foliage in your yard. If you have bald spots on your lawn, laying down the most realistic looking fake grass can help you create a more lush appearance. Be sure to remove broken tree branches, dead bushes, and anything else that will interfere with the look you're trying to create. While this will be a complex and labor-intensive process, it's necessary. Think of this as creating a blank canvas for creating your masterpiece

  2. 2 Spruce Up Your Deck or Patio

Your next step is to improve your entertaining area. You can have fun indulging your sense of creativity as you decide how to update this area to match the atmosphere of your backyard paradise. If your deck is made from teak wood, you may want to create a more tropical theme. If you used another type of wood or another material, you might be interested in creating a more American rustic theme. The style you choose will determine the decor and patio furniture you use on your patio. You can also get lighting features to match your themes, such as tiki torches for a tropical theme or outdoor paper lanterns for an Oriental theme.

  3. 3 Add Some Landscaping

Adding trees, shrubbery, and flowers to your backyard oasis is more complicated than you might think. There are several different factors to consider, starting with how each type of foliage will complement or detract from the theme you're trying to create. For example, a pine tree won't mesh well with a tropical theme. Additionally, you'll have to consider how well the foliage you choose will grow in your environment. You may have to stick with plant life that thrives in a moderate climate if you don't live in an area with hotter temperatures. Finally, you'll also have to consider the placement of trees, shrubs, and plants. You can create a beautiful vista by scattering plants and trees throughout your yard, but don't forget to plan out where you'll install walkways and other types of hardscaping.

  4. 4 Add Running Water

Unless you have plans for adding a swimming pool, you might want to think about installing a fountain, pond, or small birdbath. Placing this type of structure in the middle of your yard can create a focal point for your guests, and it can help you build out from that point in your yard. For example, you can surround your fountain or pond with flowerbeds, shrubbery, or other landscaping. Just keep in mind that standing water will attract mosquitoes and gnats. To avoid this situation, use an aerator or fan to keep the water circulating.

  5. 5 Add More Hardscaping

There are countless types of hardscaping you can add to your yard, and you're only limited by your imagination. When adding walkways, you can use brick, concrete, or wood. The type and style you choose may only be limited by your theme. You can also add a trellis to your deck or patio to provide a little extra shade and privacy. Some people add a swing or second patio at the opposite end of the yard to create additional entertaining areas. A second entertaining area creates the ideal place to add a fire pit, keeping it safely away from your home. This can double as a grilling and food preparation area if you want to go the extra mile and install an outdoor kitchen.

Once you develop a plan for how you want your yard to look, you will have to create a plan for bringing your ideas to life. You can tackle the project yourself, but work that you don't have the tools or skills to handle should be completed by professionals. A landscaping company can help you get the professional quality results you expect in creating an oasis out of your backyard.
