Nobody wants to deal with acne flare-ups. While it can be challenging to pinpoint what is the root of your acne problem, there are certain things that may be more likely to aggravate these breakouts. Here are six of the major culprits that may be causing your acne.

Oil-based Beauty Products

Although your intentions may be good, the beauty products that you are using could be making your complexion angry. Oil-based products should be avoided if you suffer from acne. Oil is found in a variety of makeup products, moisturizing creams, lotions, and hair products.

Some of the most likely culprits include mineral oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and sulfates. These ingredients tend to block the pores of the skin, allowing flare-ups to erupt. Instead, you need to choose non-comedogenic products, unscented cosmetics, and a pH balanced body lotion.

Pressure to Skin

There are a number of items that apply pressure to your skin that may be aggravating your acne. If you constantly have your smartphone pressed to your face, it is no wonder that your skin may become dirty and oily. To combat this issue, be sure to clean your phone often.

Another aggravating issue is a dirty pillowcase. Washing your pillowcase often is one of the best things that you can do to prevent acne eruptions. Other items that may aggravate acne include hoodies, face masks, and helmets. Regularly cleaning all of these items and relieving the pressure that they apply to the skin can go a long way in preventing acne outbreaks.

Diet

What you put into your mouth may also be causing acne breakouts. Some research has pointed to foods rich in refined carbs to aggravate flare-ups. This includes pasta, bread, desserts, and bagels. Dairy products have also been linked to severe acne. If you suspect that your diet is causing your acne to worsen, it is a good idea to perform an elimination diet to see if you can get to the root of the problem.

Stress

Psychological and emotional stress is also a culprit in acne issues. The level of stress that you experience correlates with the level of hormones in your body. Hormones such as cortisol have been shown to aggravate acne by stimulating oil glands and clogging pores. Taking active steps to reduce the stress in your life may result in a clearer complexion.

Medications

The medicine that you are taking may also be inadvertently worsening your acne. Some of the most common culprits are drugs that contain androgens, testosterone, corticosteroids, or lithium. Be sure to speak with your doctor if you suspect that your medication is making your acne worse. A trained health professional may be able to offer alternative treatments or ways that you can mitigate this issue.

Touching Your Face

It is tempting to want to try to pop those pimples when they pop up. However, this only serves to aggravate the issue even more. Despite your best efforts, trying to pop the pimple sometimes just pushes the bacterial infection down under the skin. This causes more swelling and redness to occur.

In addition, your fingers are harbingers of a host of impurities. Continually touching your face transfers this grime to the surface of the skin, leading to an even greater chance of breakouts. Popping your pimples may also lead to more scarring. The bottom line is that you need to keep your hands off of your face.

There are no magic solutions when it comes to beating acne. However, keeping these six aggravating factors in mind and making the effort to reduce the effects will help to keep your skin glowing.
