Life provides its fair share of ups and downs. When you experience a hard time in your life, it's so easy to hide under the covers and wait for life to end. While it's okay to wallow and grieve, you also want to find ways to take control of your life again. If you don't know what to do in order to regain control of your life, consider the following steps.
Take Inventory of Goals and Dreams
Whether you've experienced a death, a divorce, or a job loss, life can put you in a place where you can't remember who you are and what you want out of life. This is why it's important to reconnect with yourself to remember what you've always wanted. This step might take some time to process and reflect on. Indulge in hobbies that bring joy. They might remind you of things you love and what fills you up the most. Complete projects that build your confidence. As you regain an understanding of where you'd like your life to go, write those goals and dreams down.
Break Down Your Large Tasks into Smaller Ones
When you take a look at your large goals, you might have a long list. Even if you have a small list of goals, chances are those goals will be huge undertakings. For example, if you'd like to lose a total of 50 pounds, this is not a goal that will be accomplished overnight. In fact, it will require a considerable amount of time, consistency, and sacrifice. If you look at how long it will take to complete a goal, it's easy to become discouraged and give up. Instead, it's much better to focus on how you can break down the large goal into smaller, bite-sized goals. If you focus on losing 0.5 to one pound each week, this is a realistic yet smaller goal to tackle. It's more manageable and less intimidating. While it will take a while, the time will pass anyway. You might as well commit to the process.
Develop a Productive Routine
You won't regain control of your life by wishing it into existence. Instead, you have to create a daily, weekly, and monthly plan you can stick to. Break down your lifestyle by looking at the patterns and tasks you need to take care of on a daily basis. In many cases, students get planners to write down the important tasks (homework, studying) they need to complete. Purchase a 2022 calendar in order to map out your tasks, your personal due dates, and more. Whenever you get flustered or confused about what needs to happen next, all you'll need to do is look at your calendar.
Create Time for Leisure
It's so easy to put a ton of pressure on making sure you're able to adequately gain control. However, you don't want to stress yourself out at the same time. Slow down. Develop a lifestyle that gives you room to relax, unwind and connect with people you love. If you're constantly serving others, you need to take control by understanding that there's nothing wrong with filling yourself up as well.
Cultivate Small, Yet Impactful, Habits
While it's encouraged to set goals and knock them out of the park, you also need to factor in that goals tend to be temporary. Once you fulfill those goals, you don't want to lose the momentum of becoming the person who was able to accomplish those goals. This is why it's important to develop daily habits that make up the system that guides and supports your life. Habits like waking up early, exercise, and adequate rest are excellent habits to develop. They're small yet extremely impactful in the long run.
Everyone experiences hard times in life. There are times when life will knock the wind out of you. However, the people who know how to regain control and keep going are the ones who will get the most that life has to offer them. You don't have to settle for a negative and unfulfilling life. You can regain control, take charge and steer the ship in the direction of your dreams. Take it one day at a time because each day provides its own journey. Still, when you commit yourself to the process, you'll build confidence in yourself and your ability to overcome anything that life throws your way.
