The Legal Aid Council has advised that it has provided legal representation to 61-year-old Paul Coote, who has been accused of the murder of his pregnant girlfriend and his two children in Green Island, Hanover.
The killings took place in Green Island on Wednesday morning.
In a press release, the Legal Aid Council said two senior lawyers at the private bar – Tamika Davis and Delford Morgan – have been assigned to provide representation to the accused man.
The council said the assignments were made only hours after Coote’s arrest, with one of the lawyers quickly requesting that the accused be removed from the general lock-up population and placed in another area for his personal safety and security.
The release said the Coote is now at a location where there is less risk of physical assault against him.
The accused, who is a car wash worker, is to be represented by the attorneys from the pre-charge process, through the committal proceedings at the Parish Court level, and up to trial, if applicable, at the Circuit Court level.
This is while the police have indicated that Coote is expected to be charged by Friday.
“He is now being questioned and will be charged for the murders by tomorrow morning,” Superintendent Sharon Beeput, the commanding officer for the Hanover Police Division, told Loop News.
And not to be left out of the equation, a number of social media users have expressed dissatisfaction with the accused being charged only with the killing of the three persons. They have been clamouring for him to be also charged with the death of his girlfriend’s unborn child.
“The woman was almost eight months’ pregnant and him kill her and her children. He should be charged for a quadruple murder,” declared one user with a position that was reflective of others.
Reports are that about 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 38-year-old Adanique Cunningham of Dixon Wharf and her two children, Jayanna Coote, 7, and four-year-old Shanique Coote, both of Industry Cove, went to Coote’s house, where it is alleged that both parents got into an argument that descended into a physical confrontation.
