![]() If someone ask me how they could get into the Reggae music industry, I truly cannot provide any guidelines as to the steps they would have to take in order to achieve their goal. The question is when can you measure the true success in Reggae Music, and how do you really define the industry. I can honestly say there are individuals in this business posing as professionals and veterans, however due to their lack of music knowledge and experience, they create a roadblock for those upcoming business owners that were professionally trained and has the experience to turn the business around. Let me give you an example of why I believe there is an absence of an industry. When I first started my venture as a Dancehall Artists, I was clueless as to where to actually start. Since I had the money, I decided to venture towards music production, so I produced my own music. The first mistake in that was thinking I can do it myself. I made music for me, and me only, because I was the only one listening to my own music. Which radio station would really play an amatuer music single for a completely unknown artist? The fact there were no known person or existing company present to provide guidance or advise proves that in New York, is not a good place for any Reggae Artist to start. The so-call Radio programs would not play your music because you are not a known artist and promotionally, advertisers are not sold on the concept of true music promotions. Artists and Music promotions does not really exist for Reggae & Soca music in New York, because companies are promoting their own events that's beneficial to their companies. I cannot honestly say I've heard a program on the local radio that focus only on music promotions for a Reggae & Soca Artist. These programs play the artists music, however they don't really promote the sales of the songs just the events they are hosting which leads me to believe that music sales in New York is low for that reason. In essence, they are using the artists name and music for their own self promotion. This is what destroys real marketing and promotions and is the reason for FiWEH.com's existence. , I believe there should be a company or group of companies that exist to provide music guidance especially for music laws, production, royalties, marketing and promotions for Reggae & Soca Artists. There should be individuals the youth look up to whenever they are considering a career in Reggae & Soca. These companies should provide yearly seminars to discuss the changes in the music and the steps to take in order to combat those changes. We should move away from a genre that always have discussions and never take true actions. We should become more active in the careers of the artists within our genre, provide them the essence of an industry. Kingston, Trinidad, Miami, and New York should be the mecca of Reggae & Soca Music. We should treat our artists like the celebrities they are instead second rated musicians. If we make our artists feel at home within our own genres, then we could attrack more fans and customers.
